Renewable energy investment increased in 2011 in the United States, making the U.S. the world leader in renewable investments for the year. However, such trends are not expected to continue as governmental incentives are set to expire and will limit companies and individuals willing to invest in the field. However, renewable energy is still going strong across the country, with the presence of renewable installations and companies involved in the field ever-growing.

Turner Enterprises Inc. is a company owned by Ted Turner. A branch of the company is Turner Renewables Energy which has become increasingly involved in the U.S. renewable industry in the last few years. The company is already an owner of a solar energy project in the state of New Mexico. This purchase was in collaboration with Southern Co.

The New Mexico Cimarron solar farm is equal to 30 megawatts of energy generation. It has proven not be the last collaboration between Turner and Southern Co., however. The Southern Co. is a major utility in the U.S., with approximately 4.4 million customers in four states. Now the two companies have recently announced the acquisition of another solar farm, this one located in North Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Apex solar farm in Nevada will total 20 megawatts of energy generation. Construction began in October and is not yet complete. Approximately 88,000 solar panels will be used on the project and once completed the energy will be purchased by NV Energy Inc.. The utility will purchase the energy for twenty-five years according to their contract.

Southern Co. is also planning further renewable energy projects, including a major biomass plant. Their 100 megawatt biomass plant is currently under construction in Texas. Southern Co. is also working on carbon capture techniques for their typical plants as well.
