The popularity of solar energy is growing around the world. Numerous major installments have been made in past months from China to the United States. The American Southwest is a very popular locale for solar energy and will soon have more locations.
Xcel Energy and SunEdison recently announced an agreement to install five solar energy facilities in New Mexico. The facilities will all be located in the southeastern part of the state, particularly Lea and Eddy counties.
In total, the companies are expected to install upwards of 50 megawatts of solar energy. Overall, the project as it stands will be one of the major solar projects in the United States. In total, the facilities are expected to be able to power upwards of 10,000 homes.
Xcel and SunEdison have agreed to a twenty-year deal. SunEdison will be the main component behind the facilities, as they will be building and running the facilities. However, Xcel has agreed to purchase the power that is created by the facilities.
Xcel is hoping these facilities will help them meet New Mexico renewable energy standards as well as assist in the economy of the state. The companies have indicated that the facilities should be up and running sometime in the year 2011.
