Chris has a long history of government and volunteer work for environmental causes. She participated in the early planning efforts for Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie in Illinois, the nation's first site of this type. Her work experience includes habitat restoration and invasive species management. Chris also worked in the non-profit sector with the Nature Conservancy as their GIS specialist. Her background also includes extensive volunteer work with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. She and her husband did restoration work at Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. For these volunteers efforts, they were awarded the State of Kentucky's Colonel award. Chris has a B.S. in biology, with an emphasis on wildlife biology. Ornithology and plant taxonomy are favorite areas of interest for her. She is an avid hiker and geocacher.
