Who would have thought or ever imagined, that being a female vet would pose such problems. Research and studies have led us to believe that female vets are susceptible to, and run a high risk of miscarriage as they are exposed to anesthetic gases as well as pesticides.

A study was conducted, in which women took part in a survey that was a Project for Health Risks of Australian Veterinarians. All those who graduated from various Australian veterinary schools were surveyed.

New Restaurant Aims to be London’s Greenest

Waterhouse, a new restaurant on the banks of the Regent’s canal in London, has opened this month, claiming to be the city’s most eco-friendly restaurant.

The menu at the Waterhouse makes use of organic, seasonal ingredients – but it is the building itself, rather than the food, which really helps the restaurant stand out. The building’s waterside location has been used to full effect, as water from the canal will be used to help cool the building, rather than using traditional air conditioning systems. Additionally solar panels on the roof will heat water, organic kitchen waste will be composted by a small worm farm – and the resulting vermicast will be used for the restaurant’s herb garden, and the customer bathrooms will be paper free – the specially designed toilets spray users with a jet of warm water, followed by a blast of warm air, eliminating the need for toilet paper.

The eco-friendly restaurant, which is owned by the charitable regeneration agency, the Shoreditch Trust, which has invested £400,000 in setting it up and fitting it out, will also be the first restaurant in the country to replace bottled water with filtered tap water, using a on-site filtration system.

Russia in the early 1990s hit its population high of 148 million people. But since this mark, the country has been on a decline. With a bleak future, Russia knows the reasons for this problem, but few solutions have been put into place to reject the grim future for their numbers.

The Shrinking Numbers

Russia has gone from its peak of 148 million to now 143 million. With numbers falling like these, many predict that if the decline continues at this pace, the country will be down to 111 million by 2050. This gives Russia a population decrease of 20%.

Last night, I had the chance to sit in on a press conference organized by the co-founders of Brighter Planet, an organization that endeavors to give citizens the tools they need to lessen their environmental impact on the world. The founders - an environmental economics professor and his former student - answered questions about their first project: a partnership with Bank of America to create a credit card that racks up carbon offset credits instead of air-miles or consumer "points." As the now-guilty owner of a points credit card, I quickly realized what an infinitely more positive effect carbon offset credits would have on my lifestyle than, say, a free coin sorter or desk golf set.

That said, Kristin at GreenStyleMom brought up an excellent question in response to the credit card announcement (to paraphrase): doesn't this conflict with the environmental duty to consume less? Co-founders Dr. Jonathan Isham and Andy Rossmeissl were quick to note that carbon offsetting is the third line of defense. Before it, comes consuming less often and with the right things. However, sometimes you need to buy a refrigerator (energy efficient!) or fly to visit your sister. In those instances, you can minimize your impact by racking up carbon offsets.
