One of the most worst diseases a person can get is Lyme
Disease. This disease comes from tick-borne bites and can become a serious
problem if global warming has anything to say about it. Global warming is increasing
the length of seasons, which is allowing species of ticks to stay alive
throughout the year, and that makes them a problem year round, and not just in
the summer time. According to Yale
University, global
warming is changing the feeding patterns of ticks and that can lead to more
severe infections by ticks to people who are bit by ticks.
Since 1982, there has been a 25-fold increase in Lyme
Disease. Discovered back in the 1970s in Lyme, Conn. in a bunch of children, it has now become the most
common tick-borne infection in the United States. In 2007, there were
27,444 cases of Lyme Disease. That is a huge increase from the less than 10,000
that were reported during the early 1990s.
While Lyme Disease can be treated easily with early
diagnosis that includes the appearance of a bulls-eye rash, the risk of no
treatment makes Lyme Disease much more serious. Without treatment, the
infection gets into the bloodstream and that can lead to facial palsy, pains,
heartbeat problems and arthritis.
Often when we think of global warming, we think of changing
habitats, rising seas and changing weather patterns, but we often forget about
the small changes that can happen. The reverberating impact that spreads out
from climate change like ripples in a pond. With the changing of our world,
small things like ticks change too, and that can change some lives forever.
Global warming is changing the habits of many animals, making them more dangerous or causing them to die away. While it is hard to predict the future with climate change, one thing is certain, the world is changing and will be very different from the one we all grew up in. Whether it is Lyme Disease or rising oceans, nature is beginning to fight back against our relentless onslaught of environmental destruction. Sorry to say, we are no match for nature.
