Jack Johnson Blazing a Green Trail

The ex-surfing champion and musician, Jack Johnson, is one of the most vocal environmental campaigners in the music industry – and his success as a singer has also allowed him to exert his influence over some of the industry’s biggest players.

Brushfire Records, for instance, the label owned by Johnson, convinced Universal (their manufacturer/distributor) to use FSC-certified recycled paper for all their Brushfire music and movie releases, developed the first 100% recycled plastic tray, and piloted a new form of environmental packaging called Eco-Pac. Brushfire is currently challenging Universal to develop a biodegradable corn-based shrink wrap and soy-based inks for use on CD packaging.

As well as making use of the eco-packaging, Jack Johnson’s latest album, Sleep through the Static, was also recorded using 100% solar energy and carries the 1% For The Planet logo – meaning one percent of the album profits will go to environmental charities.

Even the headquarters of Brushfire records is setting the standards for the industry. The newly renovated green building features enough solar panels to provide all the power for the offices and studio; wall insulation made from blue jean scraps, and a green roof.

During his 2008 tour dates, which include the eco-friendly Kokua Festival which Brushfire Records runs (held on Earth Day Weekend in Hawaii), Johnson is also implementing the usual green initiatives now required for a tour to be considered eco-friendly – these include reducing waste with the use of biodegradable food service items and reusable water bottles that can be refilled on-site, fuelling tour vehicles and generators with biodiesel and offering eco-friendly tour merchandise, including organic cotton clothing, reusable water bottles, and tote bags.

In addition, during 2008 tour dates in America, Johnson will be encouraging everyone at his concerts to vote in November – as the outcome of the elections will, of course, have a major impact on the planet. For now though, Johnson is hoping others in the music industry follow his example, and make any impact they can on greening up music.

Good for him! It's great to hear about a 'green' celebrity who actually walks the talk and doesn't just give lip service.
