I don't know what age your neices are, but character curtains are often for sale in charity shops. Or really old 70s curtains make an excellent retro look which is quite fashionable, if they're older.
I made one out of some absolutely terrible green flowers curtains. Dreadful as curtains, but they looked really good on a bag!
