Default Best way to conserve water usage

I know that running appliances at off-peak periods saves on electricity, but what are the best ways to save on water consumption?

I just had the shower running long enough to use up the hot water, but since I don't have a tub, I have no other way to do the following:

1. wash clothes(we're not allowed to use the laundry facilities anymore and we don't have much time for the landrymat)

2. wash the hamster's maze and tunnel system. The kitchen sink isn't the biggest, and it's not really hygenic to wash her stuff where we wash our dishes.

The funny thing is that I had the shower on long enough that it caused the laundry soap suds to back up the drain in the ktchen.

I'm going to be up all night packing for the move and trying to do 3 million things at once, but I'm used to that and I don't mind. Night time seems to be the only time things can get done.
