why get funding from the government when you can get funding from the United Nations?
Yep. Apply with the UNDP (United NAtions Develpoment Program), it's a branch of the UN which bases itself solely on environmental issues and sustainable development.
They were set up by the GEF some 15 years back. I've worked with the UNDP myself last year, saving a forest and everything. and believe me when I say that the UNDP gives enormous funding. I was going to ask them for money myself ( I wanted to create a free newletter a few months back ), they sent me the funding application paperwork, but then I got caught up in other stuff...
and since you're from Canada, you should know that the Canadian Government donates a lot of money every year to the UN. maybe it's about time we actually use some of it, huh? anyway, good luck and here are a coupe of links:
