I was under the impression that since the only energy the car needs while on the highway is to overcome friction from drag and from the tires touching the concrete, which is a lot less energy than people might think.

So that on the freeway a hybrid helps by shutting down most of the cylinders and uses a small amount of engine and a small amount of electricity to give the small push the car needs to get past the wind.
