Re: The importance of winter
I agree. I'm not particularly fond of winter, it means a bit more trouble and discomfort, but winter is natural and necessary to replenish our water supplies and complete our environmental cycle in northern lands.
I've learned to take advantage of winter. I need to have something to do besides sit on my can in front of a computer. I bought a pair of snowshoes complete with ski poles. Every day, I put them on and go for a walk on the greenbelt behind our house. The neighbors think I'm nuts but they get bored watching TV all winter.

Re: The importance of winter
False spring plays havoc with my poor garden. All my fruit trees are in blossom, which is beautiful to look out on in February, but it will just take one cold frost & there will be no fruit this year.

Re: The importance of winter
Well I'm sitting here watching the snow fall (again) and have been warned that driving is dangerous (again). however, I love winter and would hate to lose it.

Yep, expecting around 20cms in the next day. 170cms total so far this winter, a record so far.

Re: The importance of winter
We have had an interesting winter....Feb was a month of 2 days of rain.....5 days of ice....followed by 2 days of rain and 5 days of ice. When I say ice I mean 3-5 inches at a time.
Well that all melted last Tuesday.....so the throughly saturated and squishy ground get a chance to dry out.
Wrong
We then got 20 inches of rain in 15 hours. Because the water had no place to go, it didn't. The area has flooded. This is considered the worst flood since 1937.
We need a giant blow dryer....

Re: The importance of winter
Well, the winter storms along the coast are not only beautiful but cleansing. We have a jetty at the beach we visit the most, and long about July or August it starts to smell very...ripe. The air's not blowing, the water's not moving the spume and it begins to smell like a fish store gone bad! Just one storm helps immensely. Luckily we are big storm lovers!
