I'm currently a high school student being forced into an environmental education program at my high school with an annoyingly political textbook and an upfrontly passionate teacher in which he lists the downsides of capitalism and leaves us to ponder what next. Now that that's set:
It seems that global warming in the public eye is an extremely politicized issue. All the politicians advocate change "Change we can believe in!" "Together we can!"(suffix "change america"). Everything common citizens know about it is what's portrayed in the media. We hear that certain gasses can trap heat in the "greenhouse"effect and that humans are releasing these gasses. The logical conclusion given those two pieces of information would be that humans are causing this global warming. Set aside "hockey stick" controversy and the levels of change, at this point it seems undeniably so that the world temperature in various amounts in various ways set aside anomalies and inconsistent rates is increasing in temperature. Some things, however, seem to be de-emphasized. For example, global warming is also occurring on mars (ít's all the martian cars). The majority of the warming in New York over the last 100 years took place before 1970. There has been an anomaly in solar levels in the past few years. All the CO2 climate models developed by scientists to replicate the changing temperature based on CO2 levels have failed. If it is CO2 that's causing this warming, there's evidence that volcanoes may be releasing up to 98% of the CO2. Al gore burns as much fuel in a single trans-continental flight in his private jet than a typical SUV burns in a year. Why are these not mentioned? Why is there such overwhelming support when there are points un-answered? Why is anyone listening to Al Gore? My last point is on prioritization. The Montreal Protocol (or whatever stopped freon emissions) did 100 times what the Kyoto could ever hope to do for global warming even with full cooperation. Why are we dedicating so much effort to this principle, why do we care so much about this, suggest that we will "stop" global warming, when this is such an impossible task. All we could possibly hope for in a lifetime is to reduce the rate of the climate change (assuming it's CO2 based). Then I see that these ads "stop global warming.com"! GARBAGE! POLITICAL COMMUNIST PROPOGANDA! There's no way this is at all possible or reasonable in any stretch of imagination. Friggin china is sitting over there belching out pollution so much so that the majority of particle pollution in LA comes from china! Even if we all replaced ye compact florescent bulbs in our lights, the polar bears will still die. Yet, as we focus on this, people are dieing of starvation in africa every day, the state of georgia is OUT of drinkable fresh water, agriculture is wasting vast amounts of limited freshwater resources and washing fertilizers into oceans creating algal blooms which decay and create literal death zones in the ocean. A "war" rages in Irag further deepening national debt. All this, but what about the polar bears? PS I haven't decided if I want to start a flame war, but here goes. |
