looks like we are all agreed then.... Earth doesn't need us as much as we need it... Shame that most people will find out when it's too late.

It's actually a silly question on its face. We are only a blip on the radar of the history of the earth. It did fine without us in the past. It will do fine in the future.

Planet earth is constructed around natural systems. These systems are self sustaining energy capture networks that recycle material back into the system. Human systems are constructed to monopolize the energy from natural systems. The end result is that natural systems are interrupted and lose energy capture pathways (eg. diversity). We need to be more respectful of the natural systems that are the basis for functioning human systems.

I read somewhere once that humanity is like a mold on the surface of earth. If you think about it we kind of are, it's quite a parasitic relationship we have with this planet. Just look at the surface of the earth, we've spread across it like a disease. I know this is kind of a weird, almost morbid, way of looking at it but the earth will be fine with or without us. It all depends on how long we plan to survive here.

One thing I have never understood about most environmentalists: Why they seem to have more respect for the planet itself and the animals than they do for the other humans.

Did you see the National Geographic (I think) version of this, "Life After People"? It's amazing how quickly what we built gets swept under mother nature's rug.

we are nothing but an irritating pimple on the face of Gaia... Any time she wants she can just squeeze us off and dab the empty space with soothing lotion.... in a short time. we wouldn't even leave a scar....

I found that show a bit far fetched at times... but still very interesting.

to think otherwise is merely conceit...

In the history of the earth we are but a blink of the eye. It has gone through some very traumatic changes and our fouling it up the way we are is certainly not helping but, Climate change is inevitable. Magnetic poles change every ten to twenty thousand years,Volcanoes can expel Billions of tons of chemicals into the air with a single episode. for billions of years it wasn't even habitable for us. We're lucky to be here at all. Live life and enjoy each new day.
