Could the earth survive without us?
According to the documentary I just watched on tv, yes, it could.
It was a very fascinating documentary, I urge you to watch it if you can.
Here's a synopsis about the show.

Re: Could the earth survive without us?
Well if you believe in the theory of evolution, then it did survive without us once before. Even if you don't, we know that domestic animals weren't always domestic. There were once wild sheep, horses, etc., so no doubt some of our domestic animals would die off without tending from us, but some of the hardier ones might forage and adapt and pass that on to their offspring.

Re: Could the earth survive without us?
I did watch part of this show. My husband had it on the TV recently. It was very well done, very interesting. Kind of strange in some ways.

Re: Could the earth survive without us?
It was.
I thought how interesting it was that the animals would survive, especially the domesticated ones, since there wasn't much food they could get at.
All the pollution disappearing was a good thing, and it would be nice if people would watch this and realize what they're doing to this earth.

Most definitely. In fact I like to correct people when they say that we are destroying the planet. The planet will be just fine. But if we're not careful, it won't tolerate humanity much longer.
I was surprised to see Farley Mowat on tv last night (Canadian show called The Hour) saying something similar: that all will be better for the earth when we are no longer around and nature can revert to it's former glory.

I didn't watch it, but I never thought that the world COULDN'T survive without us. I think the very thought that we keep everything going is egotistical in the EXTREME!

Re: Could the earth survive without us?
in the life of mother earth we are just a couple of heartbeats.... it was all here long before we got here, and it will all still be here long after we've gone...
to think otherwise is merely conceit...

Re: Could the earth survive without us?
Saving Green,
I've been long saying that! People are forever moaning about how we are going to kill the earth. I keep reminding that this planet has done far worse to itself than we ever have and the worst thing we could do would be to make it inhospitable to ourselves. It will shake us off like a bad cold and go on. At least until the sun goes supernova....

I am not sure how people get the idea that their not being present leaves the planet dead.
Isn't this the ultimate ego trip?

Re: Could the earth survive without us?
Well, the planet survived very happily without us for millions of years. Who knows, it could be patiently waiting for us to disappear...
