Default UV rays

We have a little greenhouse that we covered with a semi opaque plastic called visqueen. It use to take about a year for the sun rays to start to disenegrate the plastic so we'd have to recover it. This year it took about 3 months & it was all deteriorated. We have gone ahead and put some corrugated fiberglass on it now but wow-that was an eye opener.
I am fair skinned & acutely aware of the sun's effects on me. At times in the summer the sun on my skin is almost uncomfortable. I can really feel the heat & the rays like never before. I'm a cave dweller in the summer! A shade hopper! I'm also not crazy about using the sunscreens that have questionable & unquestionably dangerous ingredients in them. I make my own sunscreen with oils like sesame & coconut that have natural sunsceen properties. The ozone is very much a concern for me!

We lucked out and got a frame up pieces for the greenhouse for $14.00. After buying all the wood I think we got it for less than $100.-I'll have to ask hubby to double check. They have these plastic pieces-I guess you could describe them like a tinker toys that you just slide the wood ends into & it makes a charming little set up. When I can get more info I will share it. We recycled the corrugated fiberglass panels so that didnt cost us anything. We covered the floor with crushed oyster shell. Here's a picture of the one we had at our old place. If you look at the joints you might get a better idea of what I am talking about!

We are at about 1600ft. elevation in the sierra nev. foothills of No. California. About an hour N.E. of Sacramento. We get rare snow-though much last year! I does get bitter cold here-it was frosty this morning. So beautiful with everything covered in sparkles! Yes, we do grow in the greenhouse in the winter. I have tree seeds that i am going to be starting soon. Here's a pic of our little town last New years day when we got a surprise snow.
