Add to that list flooding/rise in sea level, climate change, and oil depletion-related issues. Perhaps famine would be a good one.
Famine is a very real possibility. Check out Outgrowing the Earth, by Lester R. Brown (2004), published by Earth Policy Institute. Another potential megadisaster is the possibility of the Yellowsone Caldera blowing and causing the equivalent of a nuclear winter (not to mention what it would do to the immediate vicinity).

I think its not really a matter of wondering IF they will happen, but WHEN will they happen. We in the industrial rich end of the globe dont get to see the things that are all ready happening in many parts of the world. How niave can one be to think that our way of life can continue unabated as it has for so long...symbiosis can not continue when we are destroying the very thing that keeps us alive. Take for instance where you live...if all the power suddenly turned off, no more running water....no more refrigeration...if suddenly your area of the world became like Somolia or Dafur. Do you honestly think that our culture would respond any differently, that people would share there reserves of water and food, that the government would step in and help us (remember katrina). I love the old peter tosh song....What you going to do when the well runs dry....well unfortunately for most...the answer is die, from starvation and astonishment at our inability to look past our own simple greed and needs at the warning signs that were there for many many years

Default "how long do we have left"....Last Days on Earth

hi everyone
the topic of "how long do we have left"....yikes!
I read many of the posts, not all, so I apologize in advance if someone already posted this link or mentioned the show.

Earlier this year ABC NEWS, aired a special called LAST DAYS ON EARTH. Scientists talk about the top 10 ways earth will come to an end...it was definetly scary. It includes natural and man made ways. Anyone see it?

I wanted to order it but with the canadian exchange rate and international shipping it's too pricy.

Anyway if you can check it out....

overview and clips....

purchase the dvd...
