I'm with Sim on this – screw the debate. I mean, we have no way of knowing if it is correlation or causation; if humans are causing the temperature to go up or not. But, in the long run, it doesn't really matter. What matters is:

a) what, if anything, we can do to stop it and
b) how will we survive if we cannot stop it

the energy we put into blame is taking energy away from dealing with the facts of the situation.

I have a son with a birth defect. We never did the 'what did I do to cause this' dance, because we wanted to focus on dealing with it. Causation is an interest, sure, but far less pressing than dealing with reality.

Admitting causation is necessary to get policy makers to do ANYTHING. The UN report released yesterday stated that 1) global climate change is real and 2) it is caused by humans. Even that is not enough to get governments( like the U.S.) to act.

getting to the cause of the problem i feel is very important... like all the damn doctors and drug companies that spend billions of dollars in developing cancer treating drugs.. what they need to look at is what CAUSES the cancer and eliminate it there... cancer is caused by toxins in our bodies, poor and incomplete diets, poor functioning immune systems.. etc.. eliminate those and BAM cancer is gone...

i saw that... made me so angry!!! they made the scientist 'water down' the summary that would be presented to the world... pathetic

Hi All

On Cancer

They don't know why! Cancer is a poorly understood disease by the common person and for all the work they have done they have learned what cancer is but still do not understand why. Yes, toxins in our bodies and such can cause cancer. You can be clean and toxin free and still get cancer. Why? The " why" they don't understand is that any cell is a potential cancer cell which for some reason doesn't stop dividing when it becomes detached from it's place of origin. Normally, cells will die and be flushed by the body once detached from the body like a cheek cell that is torn away eating potato chips. It's still a live cell and should stop division but doesn't. If they knew the why instead of just that what; the issue would be resolved..

All I can say is that I recall the words of Bush, echoed by Harper and many others. They will not sacrifice the economy for the sake of environmental change and in Canada; even though global warming is the number one issue in the world; a majority of Canadians and likely Americans too; will notsignificantly alter their lifestyles and believe they shouldn't have to sacrifice our standard of living. It seems that a standard of living exceeds a "quality of life". We can lay a lot on the leadership but it seems they would not be leaders long if they go against the wishes of their constituents. What's the real issue??

a) stop contributing to it as an individual and do more than that; anything more. nature has a capacity to heal and adapt if it can get some ease to recover. The question that still remains is; Can it recover to continue to serve life on the current scale of human infestation.

b) We will survive as a bunch of warring savages feeding off the scraps of the land left behind from a decayed and dying civilization and then likely, each other. We have the former down pat already. Perhaps it is just natural that species emerge on this planet and perish as briefly to be replaced by a new species and a new natural order, reordered from the former order. In our case, we are making it happen if you believe the debate for human induced warming.

c) Remember the song; "It's the end of the world as you know it". That time that is oft reported from dreams and prophecy and never seems to come. I thought there would be more wailing and gnashing but as far as the "end of days" goes; it's only just begun. Unless.......

The reality is that the global ecosystem and many hundreds of millions of lives cannot;CANNOTCANNOT; afford our freedom to choose and because we have consistently demonstrated our wastefulness, greed and a general lack of self control; we may have to lose those rights to a large degree.

Let's face it; The "freedom" can't last in it's current form. We are in decline.

Hiya Tes

A more true statement was never made. I would suggest that we are in the reality dealing with us stage. I struggled a long time to understand the why of so many who demand change while persisting in the same consequence by their own actions or lack of action to change.

Global Warming is a Fact

The second year in a row that hurricanes have been worst on record

weather extremes and natural catastrophe abound worldwide

increases in plate tectonic activity(earthquakes) which means that if mid oceanic plates are subducting and moving then it will be followed by volcanic eruptions as more materials enter earths furnace to be melted. That's natural pollution and the melted rock has to go somewhere.

10000 species a day; extinct

approaching inevitability of anniverary of 65 million year ago near extinction/evolution event (subjective)

approaching inevitability of anniversay of major volcanic eruptive event as demonstrate by geological record(albeit subjective) The fact of global warming is tied to what I have identified as "heat loading". When greenhouse gasses do not allow heat to escape into space as I believe the ozone hole has purpose toward as a check valve to maintain a homeostatic balance. Our degradattion of the ozone by the production and use of CFC's allowed for certain cooling but apparently it is considered that we offest that by our production greenhouse gases. Increasing production of greenhouse gases and heat and natural closing of the ozone have cobined to trap heat. What's the problem? Apart from the melting of polar ice caps that free aditional carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and flood lowlands worldwide with rising oceans there is the issue of heat as temperatures rise. If it doesn't bleed off into space then it transfers to massive objects that retain heat. Rockss, building, dirt oceans are all heat sinks. More heat within the biosphere will translate eventually to higher earth core temperatures unless I am missing something critical in natural law. Any wisdom is appreciated from the knowledgeable.

in spite of declining birthrates in many countries and not to mention the aside discussion about regional declines in rates and clusters of environmental related burth anomaly and broad genetic implication across the species we are a population on the rise. Our vitaminized, sterilized, plasticised and pasteurized society society has in our medical ingenuity; offered us longevity as well. As popualtion grows, industrialization grows, as demand grows and production rises as consumption rises as the population continues to climb and sustainability continues to decline.

water isn't crystal clear. supplies of fresh are dwindling. acquifers are draining and rising sealevels are inundating fresh water marshes and flooding of lowlands apparently frequently or occasionally more often.(I'd have to do the stats) Fresh water is often contaminated and purified by law for good reason. All the local fresh water springs I know of are closed to to contamination from natural and unnatural sources and many I speak with can relate thee same tale throught continental North America. Most shallow ground water wells near populated areas are often broadly contaminated even when considered safe. We are wastefully consumptive of the most precious resource of all. Fresh Water. We pave the natural filters, swamplands, to build upon. Tragic that we also destroy them to create farmland to replace the farm land we built upon. We have so drastically alterd the physical course of the the water cycle and provide additional additives to it while we remove the checks and balances(flora/fauna/ habitat) that would ensure a continuous fresh supply that is relatively safe when untreated.

Medication and medicine have forced adaptation in nature. Our micro world operates in a relatively faster time frame and evolves and adapts far more rapidly than than our stumbling species. As our medical ingenuity increases slowly and the many have come to rely on fortified immunity via medicine; virus and bacteria seek to thrive and new ones have naturally emerged as a product of our existance through mutation and direct influence. Some influence we know has gone awry for commerce and war. Nature seeks to balance so now the spectrum grows broad and scientists struggle for a broader spectrum antibiotic and I believe we are losing the race. Microbial live has the edge and outnumbers us to the powers of tens. Can we be clever enough soon enough to outrun nature. Keep in mind that the earth is an organism as well and it is continuously evolving in ways that have nothing whatsoever to do with us and cannot ever be affected by us because they are the natural process that permits all existance on this planet or not.

Our saving grace will be good food for life and health but that is tainted as well. It doesn't matter how organic your garden was intended there are many things that collect upon your soil to find it's way into your meal. Contaminated fish ate contaminated frogs and fishes that swim in waters we used for disposal of every toxic compound our unwanted creation of man. Where did they think the shit was going to go. like all things in nature they are incorporated by natural properties and there is a home for every molecule that exists. Since we have created many compunds of molecules not found together in nature we have found homes for anomolous attachments and possibly the natural spontaneus creation of a molecule to attached to our synthetic compounds. It sounds far fetched and science fiction but interaction is a law in this universe. In mundane terms, As the fact of interconnectedness slaps us in the face by our own hand we are eating tainted foods and even though not technically tainted we are altering it or it is altered naturally through adaptation to climate conditions which are changing at a faster rate than plant species can adapt. It is a fact that all organisms, simple and complex, exist with a limit of environmental and other tolerance and beyond that they perish unless they can adapt either naturally or in our case/pace, artificially.

As we stretch ourselves to the beyond we are on a ball of water ice eart and rock hurtling through a not so empty space on the arm of a spinning glaxy that is hurtiling through not so empty space which is hurtling... you get my drift (chckle) What are the odds based on historical record that something catastrophic happens. As they say; it's not a matter of if. It's a matter of when. There are few things inert in this existance and everything else has a consequence to it's natural and unnatural existance. It's the law. Hubris will not rewrite it. Considering that the Economic powers that be are weightily invested in continued consultion and production of resources I can understand that they are racing to capture the flag. The one with the most at the end of this endless gane is the winner and perpetuated by his heirs. We have deferred our rights to those of corporations and they too have legal voices. Championed by men. Commerce is legislated and compliance is essential and so ordered by law and structure. Necessity makes for willing complicity as we direct our free choice to their end and benefit. I am reminded of America and of the choice they made for patriotism during 911 when the call came for citizens to support their economy and their country by divesting their own interest and spend spend spend while you rebuild the headquarters of your own willing subjugation. I am no less subject so do not paint me moralistic.

You speak wisely of alternatives and many are realizable but choice is that fact that will hasten the will of the Economic regime. It is a must that we be provided affordable alternatives but until the wealthiest captains of industry are fully entrenched in reaping the greatest reward from new technologies and related products, access will be limited and costly while "they" manipulate continued consumption and we fund it by our continued consumption of fossil fuel products and support of the consumptive economic growth paradigm. If you think WalMart is your friend or KMart or any of those discount stores for providing you with low cost products that qualify as crap they are also fostering increased consumption through what is called planned obscelesance. If you wonder that stuff doesn't last as long as it use to it's a global manufacturing policy as well as a method of reducing costs disquised as aiming to reduce consumption of resources and also a necessity since we are technology driven. Technology is evolving quicker so it makes no reasonable sense to produce a lasting product. It is the result of a choice to aspire.

What alternative will you choose with your freedom today.

Remember that climate change in geologic record involves eccentricity of the Earth's orbit and variations in the tilt of the axis. You would have to be an optimist to think that the human race will witness climate change on that timeline. I hope we can make it another 1000 years. I serously doubt we have 100,000. These things cause very slow changes.

As for faster natural climate change variables, volcanic activity is modest, now and we currently have negative feedback from the reflection (albedo) of snow cover. More of an effect of the warming spike we're still in and not a cause.

I see no indication that what we're seeing now is tied into a gradual trend. It is abrupt and coincident with an increase in industrial activity.
