Exclamation Re: New energy-saving google!

What I'm saying is that when I go into my livingroom at four in the morning (in the dark) the only thing I turn on while I enjoy my coffee, is my computer. And it's quite bright being the only "light" I turn on until the sun comes up.

I think that's the case. It depends on what sort of monitor you have as to whether you'd save electricity using the black screen. I think you would save using one of the older monitors, but I dont know the exact details & would be interested to find out.

I had heard of this before back when they were calling it 'Blackle'. I don't know how effective this is, especially considering the debate over flat panel monitors making a difference or not but I might as well make the change anyhow.

I always turn my monitor off. But I was also told by a computer tech to leave my computer on because it was easier on the computer than starting it every single day. Can we think of anything else or not supposed to do with their computers to be green? Something that will cost money or repair costs?

I never turn my computer off, except every now and then to reboot and reset... it, and the monitor turn themselves off into sleep mode when idle for 5mins, and that way, it doesn't use up loads of power.. as Roguegal says, it is better for the computer, in the same way as flourescent lights are best left on for hours rather than switched on and off.. which in fact uses up more power...

That's very true and a good point. One of the tips that someone once told me was to never turn off my monitor unless it's overnight or for a couple of days. Instead I just have my sleep function ready to turn on after five minutes of inactivity. Considering that most monitors only take a split second to flick back on it's really a good idea.
