New energy-saving google!
Here's something really easy and small everyone can do to 'go green'. There's a new google search engine called SaveandSearch - Energy Saving Search and it uses less energy because it doesn't use a white screen. It's definitely something we should all start using and sending out to our friends because so many of us are on the computer each day. The site currently offers functionality in 4 different languages (english, french, spanish and chinese) and already has thousands of users each day. I currently have it set to my desktop and use it everyday! Every little bit helps.
Make the switch - SaveandSearch - Energy Saving Search

Re: New energy-saving google!
How ignorant am I? I had no idea about the white screen and how it took more energy. Good tip! Thanks.

Google’s green energy czar, Bill Weihl, says on flat-panel monitors (already estimated to be 75 percent of the market), displaying black may actually increase energy usage. He points to research from techlogg.com.

I agree while or black screen doesn't matter.... all the lcd monitors need more energy to open the shutters that allow the light to go through... the light is always on in the background of the lcd

No, no...that's ok. ROFL! I'm sure I can go to my alley and find a couple of monitors there. So sad eh?

Does every flat panel screen have to be an lcd? I have a flat panel but I am not sure if it is a lcd. I have had it for at least 4-5 years now.

Ok, I am confused about the monitors. Are you saying depending on the type of monitor sometimes a white screen uses more elictricity than a black one, and vice versa? I really like the black screen especially when I first wake up in the morning, that white google screen lights my whole room!

Forgive me but are you saying you leave your computer on so in the morning it lights your room? I have always thought the first thing you learn about conserving energy is not to leave anything on standby, not your television, not your DVD, not your computer. Maybe I have misunderstood and will gladly be corrected.
