Definately one of THEE most important factors. Another well known rule in the racing world is that "for every 100lbs you drop off a car, your quarter mile time drops by 0.1 second."
In terms of gas mileage, this means it will take less chemical energy to propel your car up to speed. IE: less gasoline = same result.
Another benefit is less wear on brakes, tires, suspension components, etc, which means $$$.
