Default £200m biofuels plant to open in Britain

Plans for a new £200m pound biofuels plant to be built in the United Kingdom have been met with mixed receptions

The plant, the biggest in the UK, is a joint venture between fuel giant BP and Associated British Foods (makers or Twinings tea and Kingsmill bread) with the American company DuPont also holding a small 10% share. Is it planned to come into operation in late 2009 producing 330,000 tonnes (420 million litres) of bioethanol per year.

It looks like an awesome step towards an environmental friendly way of life. But I'm not really sure if the pros out-weigh the cons i mean yea as the article says we could end up with overproduction, it could be like tobacco and cotton in the us during colonization all over again.

A caution about biofuels: they decrease soil fertility over time. Whenever you take something from the land, like the plant wastes that make biofuels, you remove something chemically complex (biological material) and replace it with something simple (inorganic fertilizer). Over time, soil loses elements it needs to produce nutritious food. Over the years, our vegies have lost vitamin content.

Then i do believe, if Toddf is correct (yea he's right) then my analogy was right. Though i think it can be said with anything, that's why usualy farmers rotate crops. And use manures and such to try to restore the soil.

Heh give me a Biofuel made from peanut butter and you've got a soil restorer as well as a good idea.
