Tires on the ocean floor are a poor substitute for reefs. We know that now, but 35 years ago, when those tires were put there, the idea was very different. And now we are paying the consequences for naïve ideas.

What Happened?

In 1972, as many as two million used tires were dumped off the coast of Florida. This was because of an idea that would dispose of this trash and create new reefs for sea life to flourish.

A professor of ocean engineering that was part of organizing the project said, "The really good idea was to provide habitat for marine critters so we could double or triple marine life in the area. Two million tires?! Holy smokes! Whatever happened to moderation? What seems like a good idea should be tested for a while before going haywire and doing a ton of something before you know the results.
