I hope I don't sound like I'm playing d's advocate, but hasn't the marketing of hybrid cars more or less replaced the marketing of electric ones (as a kind of compromise between the needs of the oil cartel and the needs of the environment)?

Yes it has, in the current mainstream market. The highlight of this film is to show that the automakers had a vendetta against the electric cars and fought to keep them out of the market even though demand and satisfaction with electrics was there.
