If you read "Heat: how to stop the planet from burning" by I think George Monbiot you'll see what a farce some of the auto industries' claims are. They were claiming they'd be able to produce 80 MPG vehicles by the 1930s in the 20s. Also, why is the Volt now the ultimate solution, what about all of those electric cars they scrapped in the desert a few years back?

I think you are right about GM, I think they are heavily promoting the Volt to show us that they are "doing something" while they continue selling those very profitable big pickups.

Toyota quietly announced last year that they were perfecting plug-in hybrids for the market. I think we will see a lot of them on the road before we ever see the Volt from GM.

It does look promising, but lets wait and see. Given then chances many people would be willing to buy green cars for even if they cost a bit more. But they would be saving on gas too.

This is why I'm a firm believer that the auto bailout was a horrible idea. They needed to fail. They needed to restructure. They needed to meet CAFE and other emissions standards.

Innovation is the only thing that can fix the american auto industry. Throwing money at a flawed system that values conservative failure over making steps toward success is ridiculous.
