Default Hippos being killed in Congolese national park

It looks as though hundreds of hippos are being killed in Congo - and this is actually inside a national park, where, I would have thought, they would be protected.

It seems that some sort of rebel militia are killing them for food, and also to sell on other parts as "ivory". (I thought that ivory could only come from elephants?).

About 400 of them have been killed in recent weeks. Pretty shocking stuff.

I found this out when I was browsing National Geographic's website:

" in the run-up to the second round of presidential elections in the worn-torn country, United Nations peacekeepers had announced there would be no anti-poaching operations in the park until after the elections to avoid provoking unrest."

Seems like by these measure to "avoid provoking unrest" they provoked a whole new kind of problem. That park sounds like its in all kinds of trouble.
