Default New (and adorable) Bird Species Discovered in Colombia

From Yahoo News:

Quote:
BOGOTA, Colombia - A colorful new bird has been discovered in a previously unexplored Andean cloud forest, spurring efforts to protect the area, conservation groups said Monday.

The bright yellow and red-crowned Yariguies brush-finch was named for the indigenous tribe that once inhabited the mountainous area where it was discovered.

For conservationists the discovery of the species came at a crucial time — the government has decided to set aside 500 acres of the pristine cloud forest where the bird lives to create a national park.

...The new finch, the size of a fist, is native to Colombia's eastern Andean range and considered by its discoverers to be near threatened and in need of close monitoring to prevent it from becoming endangered.

It looks like it has hair. It's nice to see a new species being named instead of just being made extinct. Sorry to be so negative but I'm just writing an article on extinction and apparently it's one species every twenty minutes. One's probably gone while you've been on this forum...

Beautiful bird. It would be nice to see more species discovered in the future.

Finding new species is an incredible thing, I hope that gets tons of publicity so people realize how much biodiversity we are losing every day. We have no idea what the animals we have already sent to extiction could possibly teach us about evolution, disease cures, or tons of other amazing stuff.

It's one of the reasons I'm getting into wildlife photography as a profession. Whenever pictures come out of a really rare animal more funding often arises.

That's great news -- if this is an unexplored cloud forest, there should be more new species discovered. Hopefully, that can happen now that this bird has been found.

For more news on recently discovered species, check out this incredible work from Conservation International...
