Default Book/Magazine list

Saw the movie/documentary list and thought we should start a recommended reading list as well.

One book I found moving and inspiring was Edward O. Wilson's The Future of Life. It provides an excellent explanation of biodiversity and how it is essential to a healthy planet, and then explains how dangerous our future is with so many species becoming extinct.

I'd also recommend Carl Safina's "Song for a Blue Ocean" -- I know there are many more but my mind is a blank at the moment

An interesting, if a bit dated, fictional work is Ecotopia by Ernest Callenbach. I'd love to see an updated version that included computer technology; the most high tech thing in the book was cable tv (it was written in the 1970s.)

"Winning The Oil End Game" by Amory Lovins and others.

Amory Lovins is the founder of the Rocky Mountain Institute in Colorado. Their goal is to provide practical and profitable environmental working solutions to governments and industry.

He practices what he advocates. He built a large modern home in Snowmass, Colorado, heats it with solar and two small wood stoves, produces most of his own electricity, has a greenhouse attached where he grows banannas year-round and averages $5/month for electricity.

Finished the 100 Mile Diet not too long ago. This non-fiction book is set in Vancouver (just about where I'm from). It's a couple that attempts to eat food that only comes within 100 miles of Vancouver. Lots of struggles but major triumphs.

I especially liked it as the locations are all locations that I know. Made me think and more aware. And it's also given me more options in terms of eating better proteins and foods not requiring a ton of resources to get here.

Watched an Interview with the author on the TVOntario show The Agenda. Seems to have his finger on the pulse of the issues. I plan to read it.

H2.ca - Smelling Land - Available for Purchase

Smelling Land is about hydrogen systems and technologies, the essential component of any strategy that can give us a chance to escape climate catastrophe. The book explains how energy systems really work, the phenomena that drive climate change – and why any practical, comprehensive defense against climate catastrophe must have hydrogen at its core.
