Computer troubles
2 days ago, my computer decided to turn into a dinosaur, it's about to go extinct. It's slowed down to the point that it's running pre internet period, slower than even the original dialup used to be.
So, as a result of this, the contest will still start as planned tomorrow, I just wont be able to easily monitor it daily.
Nothing lasts forever, and my computer is showing me that.
Live, learn, and upgrade often, I'm now starting to see.

Re: Computer troubles
You could probably get a second-hand one that would run better. I was warned against this by fussy friends, but I've been using a second-hand computer for about five years now, and I just had it upgraded a little. It runs surprisingly smoothly.

Re: Computer troubles
that is usually an indication of something that might be fixable horselover... have you run an anti spyware program for instance? and also go find ccleaner and download that... it will clear up lots of rubbish on your system and make it run faster...
I am sure i don't need to tell you to make sure your anti virus is up to date and to run it daily...
post here if you need more help and i'll talk you through stuff you can do...

Re: Computer troubles
I've had a tech look at it, there's nothing I can really do right now. I'm borrowing an extremely barebones system tomorrow, hopefully I can get through just for a few weeks until I can get something new(used) when I have the money for it.
I have antivirus and removed programs that weren't needed.
The biggest issue is that it's only affecting my internet access, everything else works no problem.

Re: Computer troubles
so did this tech tell you what exactly was wrong with it? If it's just the internet then it's probably fixable...

Re: Computer troubles
Well I'm back online, but my internet is still slow.
The main issue right now is the main cable feed to the house, buried underground, is damaged.
I'm hoping, come spring time, when they fix it, that will solve it, but judging by how slow it still is, it's not an internet problem.
But the strange thing is that my Windows programs work just fine, I've never had a problem with them being slow.

Re: Computer troubles
So the cable that brings your internet connection is damaged? Ok, so it is not a computer issue then, especially if your applications all work ok.. they don't work off the internet! They work off your computer hard drive, so there is nothing wrong with it!
Why is the cable company taking so long to fix it? Hope you are not paying them for a service they are not providing!

Re: Computer troubles
Not sure why it's taking so long, it's just insane.
I'm making sure that I don't have to pay for something I'm not getting.
The question that's really bothering me is why my internet would continue to be slow on a new line and on a different modem. If it's not my hard drive, maybe it is the motherboard?
