My parents dog went around a parking lot and ate all of the cigarette butts she could find and ended up having to have some minor surgery for nicotine poisoning. This is one thing I always think about now. We humans have the choice to hurt ourselves or not but it makes me worried to think about animals eating butts that don't know any better.

I'm a smoker... again. I keep trying to kick this thing and keep coming back.

I will tell you why smokers throw their butts out the window or in the ground in a parking lot. They assume that someone is going to clean it up. We've got street sweepers. They don't actually think their butt is just going to sit there, they pay taxes to pay for clean up and buy from stores whom of course pay contractors to keep their parking lots clean.

With that said....

I use my ashtray in my car IF I can't possibly wait any longer and MUST smoke. I've never thrown a butt out my window and I don't ash out the window either. I would be really pissed if someone threw a butt out in front of me and hit my car. Furthermore it is a huge danger on the roads at night, because when a lit butt hits the pavement it is an explosion of little cherries that scare other drivers and could cause an accident.

If I am somewhere there is no ashtray, I put the cigarette completely out then throw it in the trash can. I do not smoke while on the beach, let alone in areas populated with people... it's my choice to smoke and I don't feel like I should make everyone else around me smoke with me because that crave hit me again.

If there is no trashcan to be found for my butt, I put it in the ashtray in my car.

I can't stand the smell of cigarettes that are put out. That awful stale smell is nasty. I'd love to get a hybrid car, and even more happy to get rid of the car I have right now just because of the smell of cigarettes, but I'm not going to go and ruin another car ever again... when I quit for good, I will treat myself with a new car.

Thank you for being a responsible smoker. I agree it is a personal choice. I do get irritated when I see someone smoking in a public place and they are close to my little ones.

Litter is litter, it needs to be disposed of properly.

Chucking your butts is a disgusting habit. When I let my toddler play near the house & find him with a cigarette butt in his hand I want to make the smoker who left it there eat it themselves. I find it so disrespectful that people will walk through my property & leave their offensive litter behind them. Why would people feel a cigarette butt is OK when they'd not dream of leaving an empty drink can?

It's definitely the worst when they're littered on someone else's lawn. Most people would never dream of littering a soda can on a neighbour's lawn so why are cigarette butts okay?

When I was a toddler, I spent a lot of time with my grandfather whom was a chainsmoker and would smoke inside his house. My parents thought it was so funny that he'd ash in the ashtray then I'd grab the ashes and eat them.

They must have tasted good or something... I'd always do that. My uncles would also put beer in my bottle and didn't stop doing that until I started walking off with their beer bottles and hide under the bed drinking it.

There's also the fire risk to consider in some areas. Many forest fires are thought to have been started by discarded cigarette butts, which smoulder by the side of the road then ignite brush.

That's especially worth thinking about during the summer months when a lot of areas dry out really substantially. Like you said, if some brush catches aflame then it can spread really quickly over dry areas and cause a major problem.

Or at a playground at a park. We have one park here that is terrible. I mean come on it is bad enough that they are everywhere else but do they have to be where kids play?

Karina....you have an interesting family.....

I've never understood littering of anything. Take it into the house and put it into the trash...how freaking hard is that???
