Used chewing gum is another disgusting item which people seem to think it's OK to discard anywhere they like. Eeeeewwww

Chewing gum is another one of the more offensive things to litter. It takes forever to decompose and animals eat it and can get sick. I don't understand the people who think that it's okay to spit their gum out onto the street.

I tried to be a responsible smoker until I finally quit the ciggies and I know there are many other responsible smokers who feel the same way we do. What seems to be the fad now with the irresponsible smokers is to stub out their cigarettes on light posts or fences or wherever, at nearly their eye level. They don't care if cherries and sparks are flying around, perhaps to get in someone's eye or hit a child. Some do this with a half or their ciggie, and then they put it back in their pocket or even worse, behind the ear! What a sophisticated aroma, ciggie butt and ciggie breath all at the same time...

In the UK an advertising campaign has started to highlight the new law against cigarette butt littering. It has apparently been in force since last July but until now most people were unaware of it.

There is now an £80 ($160) on the spot fine for dropping your butt on the street.

Not heard of any instances where this has actually been enforced but it's a start!

In UK they give on the spot fines for dropping cigarette butts. It has always been a problem but when the laws came in to stop people smoking at work or in enclosed public places there were piles of cigarette butts in the street outside buildings. Now we need to start waging war on chewing gum on the streets!

I know smokers, including my husband, won't like this comment, BUT my feeling is the term "responsible smoker" is an oxymoron.

I stopped smoking years ago but in all the years that I did, I can say hand on heart never once threw a cigarette butt out the car window or in the street. I always used the ashtray or wrapped it in a tissue and kept it in my pocket until I could put it in a bin.

I used to watch my dad throwing still lit butts out the car window when I was growing up and my heart would be in my mouth. I always had this fear of another car passing us and it flying into their open window and on someone's lap.
