Default New energy-saving google!

Here's something really easy and small everyone can do to 'go green'. There's a new google search engine called SaveandSearch - Energy Saving Search and it uses less energy because it doesn't use a white screen. It's definitely something we should all start using and sending out to our friends because so many of us are on the computer each day. The site currently offers functionality in 4 different languages (english, french, spanish and chinese) and already has thousands of users each day. I currently have it set to my desktop and use it everyday! Every little bit helps.

Make the switch - SaveandSearch - Energy Saving Search

There is also Blackle - Energy Saving Search - however if you google these sites there is alot of information about how it may only save energy if you are using a CRT monitor. Since the majority of people use LCD nowadays, it may not be all it's cracked up to be. There is also some question whether or not these sites are actually affiliated with google at all.

Yeah I've read some of those articles too...although if you read savendsearch's "how" section, it says there are some energy savings with LCDs, although it is much smaller than CRTs. I guess saving a little bit is better than nothing!

I dunno, even if not much energy is being saved, I still like the look of it..easier on the eyes

Yeah with the new lcd technology you actually won't save any power with that technique... the pixels are always on... with crts I'm not sure... I would just use google they're taking big steps in being a leader in alternative energy and consumer rights.

Here is a good article from TreeHugger about this: Five Myths and Mysteries About Black Web Surfing

From the article:

Quote:
LCD monitors have a light behind the screen that is always on, so white is usually the most efficient color to produce; you just let the light shine through. Black on the hand requires the light to be completely blocked, and this takes energy. So, on the face of it, white would always be cheaper than black to create on LCD screens. Turns out this is mostly true, and on average, takes less than a watt of energy to do.
