Default Sometimes it’s the Simple Things

As much time as many of us spend reading about ways to help the environment, politicizing environmental issues and looking for ways to cut our carbon footprints, I’m always shocked when people don’t do the little things that keep our world nice. For example, I’m always floored when I’m sitting at a stop light, driving on the highway or walking down the street and I see someone drop litter. Not orange peals or liquids, I mean throw the drive-thru bag out the window kind of dropping litter.

Most parents teach their children that littering is wrong, but somehow many adults have forgotten about this. That or revel in the ‘illicit’ feeling that littering gives them. Whatever it is, it needs to stop. More than that, the unintentional littering needs to be taken care of as well. Much of the litter that is picked up by street sweepers does not come from intentional littering but from trash and waste that falls out of dumpsters and trash cans. This is something everyone has a hand in, and something that recyclers frequently unwittingly add to. You can find the entire article here http://aboutmyplanet.com/daily-green...mes-its-simple

I found out yesterday from a farmer in Richmond Hill that recycling is mandatory up there.

You're sure right about that! We were taking a walk yesterday when I started noticing all the litter in the ditch alongside the road and then we saw plastic shopping bags caught in tree limbs. I remarked to my wife that it seems like we are living in Mexico! That's the first thing we always notice when crossing the border into Mexico, trash everywhere! Surely Canada can do better than a third world nation.

I especially detest when you go to a public place like a theatre or maybe a picnic spot and see plastic bags, wafers packets etc. lying around...
Really there are trash can available everywhere, and if not you can just keep the empty packs with you and throw them when you get home...why do we so conviniently make the whole world our dustbin???

It's the ally affect. Someone else will take care of it so I don't have to worry about it. I just can't believe that some people don't feel the need to have personal responsibility anymore.

This upsets me tremendously, too... it's all over and there are trash cans
closeby more times than not. I just don't get it... why would someone
choose not to do those extra three steps to the can???

I don't know what we can do about it except to pick up the trash we see and bag it. I go out regularly and collect trash thrown on the street near my place. It's part of my exercise program.
