I have found the recycled trash bags at our supermarket too. I buy them when I need trash bags.
To remind myself to reuse my bags-I made myself a note on my grocery list. I make a 2 week grocery list and I add reminders to it.

RFL,
To answer your questions about the recycling ban....it's been in place for about 15 years, no there was no big protest....no one cared much and it was done quietly anyway....most don't know about it.

Angel, thanks but there is no bravery involved. For starters they aren't likely to read this here. Then there is the simple fact that it's not a secret. It's just how it is.

We use Seventh Generation bags as well. All the SG items are very good. They have laundry detergent that stands up to the "name brand" stuff. Also, their washing-up dish soap is good as well, and if you have sensitive skin, it doesn't dry out your fingers or hands.

I just learned that in my area that they will be taking away the option of paper and plastic. To use paper there will be a charge but they are heavily promoting the cloth bags.

announced today, Marks and Spencer in the UK will start charging customers 5p for each plastic bag used - during April they will be giving away free reusable bags. at least it makes people more aware.

AND Gordon Brown PM of Britain, announces that if companies do not take measures to reduce the number of plastic bags they give out, the government wll intervene. He doesn't mention how they are going to do that mind you .

The markets in my area already offer the cloth bags for 0.99 cents. Even my local drug stores have their own cloth bags. Most of the time when I go to the market I take my backpack with me and pack food into it. I still request paper when I don't have my backpack handy. Markets are thinking of charging customers 10 cents per plastic bag but I only heard that on tv once. Alot of baggers will double and triple things up when its not needed. Maybe some of them should be retrained on how to pack things. I might have ten things but end up with 8 bags. Basically 4 bags of groceries doubled.

Have you given any thought to making your own bags instead of purchasing them? You could use pieces of fabric you might already have and you could personalize it any way you like.
I'm not really the artsy type and bought my own at my local store. they even give me a 2% discount every time I use them, or perhaps you have an old backpack or duffel not in use. if you don't mind looking a bit out of the norm you could use one of those..I used a duffel for years as I live close to my local store and always walk to get my groceries. Now I use the cloth store bought ones and exercise with the weight on the way home by doing shoulder shrugs and curls. I get some looks walking down the street shrugging. or when I used my duffel. but, as I'm kind of a big ol' intimidating looking guy no one has ever said anything. And if they did I wouldn't pay them much attention.

That's a good idea to make own with pieces of fabric. This is affordable to everyone. Do check out some green living tips on how to go green.
