Smile Thinking when I shop!

I am making a strong effort at "thinking" when I shop. I noticed how fast our garbage can in the kitchen was filling up with all the packaging that groceries come in, so I decided to think about that when I purchase groceries. If I've a choice between products, I'm making a decision based on packaging. AND before I even leave for the store, I am working harder at planning my list. I am an impulse buyer, they get me every time. SO, if I can learn to stick to my list, I'll bring home what we need and what helps fill up my garbage can at a slower rate.

Good for you! Just remember never shop when you are hungry! That will trigger your impulse buyer within. :-)

Good tip. I know I cannot go to the store without a list or hungry because I will spend and buy way more than I need. Half the time it is on stuff that I could do with out.

One thing I noticed, cooking all our meals (from scratch) makes a big difference in the amount of packaging in the garbage. Staying at home makes it easy to cook all the time. When I worked full time it was more difficult.

It is amazing how much less packaging you throw away when you cook from scratch! We who are lucky to be home can really make a difference about that. I am also a list maker, and they get more elaborate by the week; I had never thought to categorize by packaging or lack of it. My hubby will be amused when I show him the next list. He's a good sport, though!

It helps to have a list to work from.

I also keep a list of errands in my kitchen, so that I can minimise the amount of trips I'm making by doing everything at once.

I definitely throw away far less packaging when cooking from scratch and that's a great point not just environmentally but for health reasons as well. Buying more fresh and local ingredients also cuts down on the advertising packaging that is usually put onto prepared food.

I always make a list when I shop. I also have been buying produce from a local co op. They drop off the produce every Saturday. There is no packaging, it comes in a big crate!

I'm lucky to live in a rural area where local produce is available cheaply most of the year. I use old grocery bags that I take with me to bring the stuff home. I've used some of those bags for years.
