Tips for apartment dwellers
If you're interested in green gardening but have no yard, there are still some things you can do at home. Making an herb garden is easy if you have a window with sunlight. I've also heard that there are vegetable and fruit plants bred to be small (peppers for example?).

Re: Tips for apartment dwellers
Herb garden surely sounds great. How to go about with this plantation? Is it easy to start up with this garden?

Most herbs will grow happily in pots on a sunny window sill Ammulu. Plant the ones you use in the kitch most regularly and you'll have them to hand when you need them.

Herb gardens are great. You can place those little pots in about any window that gets sunlight, so it's nice to have a little extra something there.

I agree, there are so many things that you can grow near a sunny window, but remember it will get very hot and the plant will require more water than you would expect.

Re: Tips for apartment dwellers
My mom got me a Chia herb garden for my birthday so I could have a little green in my apartment. At first I was skeptical but it really works. In essence it's just seeds with a special potting plant, but still. It has really added a lot of life to my kitchen.

Things like Basil and Parsley grow very easily from seeds in plant pots.. so does Coriander.. apart from having lovely fresh herbs to cook with, it also adds a splash of life and colour for little cost.

Lots of supermarkets sell potted herbs intended for cutting immediately for the kitchen. If you repot them straight away, they've got a good chance of surviving and serving you well. Far cheaper than the garden centre, and more instant than seed :-)

I've been thinking about an herb garden for awhile now. Prices on herbs are going through the roof, and freshly clipped herbs taste loads better than grocer bought, or dried versions.

Re: Tips for apartment dwellers
I haven't seen live herbs in my area, but then Iowa doesn't have the most adventurous supermarkets. That's one of the reasons I'm growing herbs this year. I've got dill, basil, parsley and chives, to name a few.
