I save a lot of energy by not having a tumble dryer. I live in Europe, where tumble dryers are few and far between save in laundromats. Instead, I have a hanging apparatus that I use to dry my clothes. It's better for the environment and better for your clothes: they last a lot longer that way. Some people complain about the stiffness, but there is fabric softener that goes directly in the washer, and you get used to shaking out your jeans before putting them on. Besides, what's a little stiffness when you're helping the environment?

I try to hang as much as possible out of my laundry but to be honest I'm not the best at it during the winter months when everything has to be crammed onto indoor hangers. Right now when it's nice and fresh outside I much prefer everything about outside-dried clothes.

When we lived in sunnier climes, I could hang my clothes nearly year round, but had some lines strung up on the back porch. Now I live where sunny weather shows up for a month or two, if at all.
I have the first tumble dryer I've ever had, and I use it as sparingly as possible. I have racks for drying clothes, but in the case of jeans, I have to stick them in the dryer eventually, or else they'll mildew. |

I try to hang my clothes outside every chance I get when the weather cooperates. Not only because I much prefer the smell of line dried clothes and it's the greener choice, but because it's a heck of a lot cheaper than using your tumble dryer.
I do have a line rigged up in my spare room which I can use when it's not such a nice day and a clothes horse too but like molly, sometimes I just have to use the dryer whether I like it or not. |

I live in UK and I hang my clothes out whenever I can, but in the winter I would struggle to cope without my dryer. If I use the dryer I use those dryer balls instead of softeners, they help to speed up drying too.

I don't use a dryer, but I can't stand the synthetic smell of fabric softeners and would rather do without. I dry my laundry outside if I can, inside if I can't.
I really don't have a problem with stiffness. As some people moan about and some people don't, I wonder what causes it? Could it have something to do with the softness of your water, or the length of time it takes clothes to dry? |
