Green kids, green thoughts, green hearts
Hello All,
My heart is growing greener every day and I teach my kids the "green way". I start with "trash talk" whenever we go hiking and see all of those abandoned plastic bottles and wrappers. I have discovered a whole new worl out there - starting from green houses to green clothes and a lot of other neat and environmentally friendly stuff and information.
Did you know for example that when you make lunch boxes for your kids and put grapes, apples and celery in them, you really should be considering using organically grown fruits/veggies because if your kidd happens to have asthma, commercially grown produce will make it worth due to the chemicals used.
I am learning.

Re: Green kids, green thoughts, green hearts
Hi! My name is Devi and I live in Southern California, San Diego area about 5 blocks away from the beach. I too work to be a green mom, and my 6 year old daughter thinks that it is cool that we are owners in our own grocery store (it's a co-op that specializes in organic foods). She also likes carrying our own decorated bags in, and the nickel that we get for each bag's use, she gets to put in her savings jar. Since we have switched to organic, she has had less tantrums, better days, and I have had less issues with my health as well! We are also walking more, and we carry bags to pick up trash on the sidewalks and the beach as well. We have been a bit short on cash, so we collect all the recyclables that we can, and although it's not the best reason to recycle, the monetary reward we get is definately a good incentive to begin those good habits with her!
Anyway, just wanted to say hello, it's a pleasure to be among others that feel that this planet was not inherited from our parents, but borrowed from our children.
Merry Meet!
~Devi

Welcome Greenmom and Devi -- it's great to have parents who care enough to teach their kids about the environment!

Re: Green kids, green thoughts, green hearts
Back to what Devi said about collecting trash (cans, plastic). I do that when I go for walks in our little community park. It is amazing how much trash people leave behind and where they do it. It is a park, so there are plenty of trash cans, but no - under kids slides the cans go. So I pick them up and either dispose or recycle depending on the item. More power to you, Devi

Re: Green kids, green thoughts, green hearts
Welcome, Greenmom! It is never too early to teach your kids to think green, so kudos to you! These concepts make perfect sense to children; they have a natural inclination to take care of the environment. I have done a lot of environmental outreach in our local schools so if you have any questions, please ask. I will make sure to start a new topic of links to environmental educational resources. At 3am I am not mentally equipped to put forth such an effort, but I will be sure to do so tomorrow!
I would like to say that we need to teach our children to think much differently than we did (i.e., stop the frivolous consumption!) or else there may be nothing left here for our grandchildren. Good work Moms!
Cheers!
