Organic or Local?
Given the choice of two identical products, which would you choose? The organic product flown in from miles away, or the local product that's been produced using conventional (chemical) methods?
Certainly where I am, getting a product that's both organic AND local is difficult.

Re: Organic or Local?
If I really had to choose, I'd go with organic. I know about the fumes and Co2, but this food is going directly into my body and I already have food sensitivities. I don't want to overload my body. Hopefully, one day, all food will be transported using biofuels and hybrid or hydrogen vehicles.

Re: Organic or Local?
Good question. In all honesty I would probably go with the local food only because of the transport for the organic. Would rather go organic when possible though.

Re: Organic or Local?
Sometimes I really feel that I might just say Organic but at times it isn't the same answer. It would depend, foods mostly I prefer is Organic but not all kinds of foods, some are not organic yet I prefer them over Organic.

Re: Organic or Local?
For me, it would depend on the food. Chemical additives are bad, long distance transportation is bad and there is nutrient loss along the way, especially if the food is stored for a long time. Some local foods that are not certified organic may still meet many, or all, organic requirements. I'd do the research, and pick the best for my health, which includes overall environmental health. Tough choice.

Re: Organic or Local?
It's a difficult question. When we decided to produce free range eggs, we looked at going the organic route and everything would have been fine - except we had to truck feed in from another State because there were no certified organic feed mills anywhere near us.
We decided that the negatives involved in trucking the feed outweighed the benefits of being 'certified' organic.

Re: Organic or Local?
That is a very good question. There are times where I would just automatically say organic. But after you step back and look at the big picture I am not really sure which route I would pick.

Re: Organic or Local?
Luckily for me, I can buy local and organic. We live in the middle of very fertile land that organic farmers have, in some cases, been growing for near to twenty years. There are farmer's markets in quite a few towns.
Of course, for bananas, that's organic all the way for me.

Re: Organic or Local?
There isn't anything Organic that is available in the place where I reside. It is hard to find some good food around and everything involves some insecticides and pesticides.

Re: Organic or Local?
That's a tough one. I, too, can buy both organic and local, so it's not too much of a problem. I guess I'd consider how far the organic had to go to get to me: if it's flying halfway across the world, I'd probably pick local, but if it didn't have to travel too far, then I'd buy the organic.
There are some things I buy organic regardless, like milk and free-range eggs, and meat whenever I can.
