I don't really have the room for that, but I do have some fruit trees, and grow my own herbs, and things like chives and spring onions. I tried tomatoes last year out of 'grow bags' and that was quite successful so may do that again.

No vegetable can be those that you grow yourself! It is that sweat that puts that added flavor in them. Besides that, it is the knowledge that you did it yourself and not just somebody growing a big giant field full.

actually you don't need a huge space to grow you own veggies. grow them in grow bags and containers filled with growing compost. you can even grow potatoes in a sack, with holes for drainage. it takes up only the space for the base of a sack. I grow courgettes, leeks, onions, garlic, potatoes, tomatoes and peppars as well as herbs on window sills. this way too, no digging!!!!

We were able to be almost self sufficient in fruit & veg last summer / autumn through growing our own. It's wonderful knowing exactly what has gone into the meals you are preparing for your family.

When I do buy fruit & veg I normally look for the least air miles rather than specifically organic, given the choice.

Wow, I didn't know you could grow that much inside. If I had a house I could probably try it. But, I live in a mobile home and there is not that much room. Wish I did have a house. Well, I'll just have to win the lottery!

Stav, do you mean "grow bags" like the ones advertised on television? I just saw one of those adverts and it looked like something I'd like to try.

Organic farms are becoming more common now as are pesticide free farms. It is getting easier to buy local/organic now. Here in our small town, we now have 3 places to buy such produce.

Molly, I don't know if they are the same over there, but these are sort of large bags full of nutrient packed soil that you lay flat and open at the top, allowing you to plant stuff directly into them.

like these..

handy 'how to' guide..

BBC - Gardening - Basics - How to use a growing bag

You can get kiddie type ones too, that you can get your kids to plant little things like flowers and herbs in to give them a taste for it..

I'm excited that the new place I'm moving to in the fall actually has a backyard and that I can start growing my own vegetables again, something I haven't been able to do since I lived with my own parents. I'm planning to start off with tomatoes, lettuce, and peppers. Any other suggestions?

I would suggest corn on the cob and carrots. Then you would have a good fixings for a nice stew. Of course, you have to get the meat to go with it unless you're a vegetarian.
