Re: Making the choices
I saw those grow bags advertised on TV. They look really neat. Esp. if one has a small back yard. I may invest in a few this summer.

Re: Making the choices
Even just by reading and participating in the forum here all of us are getting a much better education regarding good products and techniques to use responsibly. If you don't have many conscientious members of your family or friends the internet can be a great source to get more information.

Peas and beans are easy & very pretty. If you can't use them all fresh then they dry or otherwise preserve well. You can use the plants to screen stuff that's not so good to look at as well, until you get your garden looking the way you want it. And of course beans are great nitrogen fixers so will benefit your soil too.

Re: Making the choices
Great. Thanks for the tips. I didn't know that beans had the additional benefit of being nitrogen fixers as well so they would definitely be a good crop to get planted in the first round.

Re: Making the choices
I didn't know about beans and nitrogen either, thanks for the info. I only have a small garden now, planting boxes mostly. I was told that tomatoes wouldn't grow well because we live so close to the ocean the salt will attack the stalks and weaken them so they can't bear the fruit. Anybody know about this?

Never heard of that Molly, but I've never lived hear the sea. Perhaps you could grow a bush variety instead?
what do your neighbours grow? Having a peek at other people's gardens is always a great indicator of what grows well in an area.

Re: Making the choices
We grew tomatoes when we lived in San Jose. I don't believe that is too far from the ocean. And we had beautiful, huge tomatoes. Of course, that was out in the backyard. I would imagine that because growing them inside that they solve in the air would make too much of a difference. Best thing you could do would be to asked your local gardening shop expert.

When people tell me I can't do something I figure out a way to do it! I've grown veggies in Wolf Point, Montana......I can grow them anywhere!

Re: Making the choices
I found out today that Circle K is going to stop using plastic bags and go back to using paper bags. On one hand that is a good thing. On the other hand, unless they are going to use recycled paper for the paper bags, it may not be a good thing.

Re: Making the choices
I seen those grow bags the other day on TV. I thought that they were really unique and if they really work this would be a great way for someone that lives in an apartment to be able to grow their own fresh tomatoes.
