The technology resembles the ultrasounds used by doctors to inspect a woman’s womb. But a team of scientists are using it to map rocks deep below the Earth’s surface to hunt for oil and gas. Hoping to unlock vast reserves of natural gas and oil trapped under layers of rock, scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have teamed up with Canada’s biggest independent petroleum explorer, EnCana, to test the ultrasound exploration technology in a Wyoming gas field.
