Perhaps the UK technicians are just better educated in this sense than the North American ones? To be honest I had never heard of this before reading about it here but it's so simple I couldn't believe that it wasn't common where I live.

More likely it is because we have rules and regulations for absolutely everything, it is one of the 'joys' of being part of the EU!

You're probably right. This actually is one of the rare cases where lots of regulations actually make a difference for something positive though. Well, hopefully this trend will catch on in NA as well.

Due to the increase in the gas prices it is becoming tough to use heaters any further. I'm preferring to heat it over the stove and the quantity required. It is electric and fast and apt for use. I was able to reduce the gas bill and electric bill too was the same as before, no change.

I have one of the newer hot water heaters or do not need one of the insulating blankets. But when I had an older water either it had an insulating blanket around. Boy does it save on electricity.
