I am a strong believer that by changing the attitude towards environment we can make the world much greener and it won't take scientists to sound the alarm.
Here is my suggestion - teach your children and use your personal example when it comes to such vast problem as trash - never throw anything where it should not be thrown. The children will learn and they WILL pass it on. And when they deliver the message it will be loud and clear.
Example - we went to a beautiful little valley and observed deer grazing, observation platform was in the middle of the meadow, sun was setting, birds were singing, beautiful. On our way back my daughter saw one of the visitors throw her cigarette in the meadow, she went up to the lady and very loudly asked her "why are you polluting the forest". Lady turned beet red and hurriedly went back to pick up her cigarette.
I'm amazed that the woman didn't throw a hissy fit about that. Some people could care less and would have told your daughter to mind her own business. I'm glad this woman had the decency to correct her action.
My daughter was barely 5 at the time and the younger the child the less what he says is perceived as a threat. There is no grown up criticism in what a child says - it's just a statement of a fact that he/she has learned. But you are right different people would react differently.
True, but there still are some people who are ignorant towards children and still don't care what they say. Their thought is that it's a child and he doesn't know what he's talking about. However, some kids are very smart, and at least your daughter was aware of the world around her.
but if we teach our children the right message or give them roads to learn the good things they will remember it... nobody used to listen to me when I was a kid asking about the government yet here I am 15 years later trying to do something about it...knowledge does help
I volunteer on a Nature Preserve for the Conservancy and stumbled upon a father/son team practing their BB gun skills while out scouting the trails...at first i was stunned...then angry....but realized that all it was really about....was a lack of education, lack of awareness, conscious...that began many many years ago with someone that was not even there...(mis-informed father, uncle whatever)...to be sure i wanted to yell, like many that see ignorance towards something they love...but i simply asked why he had chosen to come to a nature preserve to practice shooting with his son....you must not have realized what we are trying to accomplish here...of course the reaction from the parent was complete silence and a feeling that he had been "busted"....i reminded him that i am hear on my own accord...as a volunteer....because i want to be here....this seemed to lighten the mood a little...and i was able to get them to look around....i showed both of them some local tracks, some birds...explained the local ecology briefly and what the goal of this preserve was and then walked off.....i stayed back off the trail but didnt hear any more bb guns going off....(either they left, put silencers on, or actually were able to have a conscious bubble pop somewhere and look around with new eyes)...the point being.....children hold the key to this planets (and our) future and it is imperitive that we do what ever we can to help children (along with everyone else) to grow up in a with a different awareness....its a huge fight...with all the money and marketing on the wrong side...but people like Green Mom are where it begins....so thanks and keep it up!
Educate them while they are young - like "Adventure Ecology" created by David de Rothschild. www.adventureecology.com
Adventure Ecology is an environmental group whose goal is to use expeditions as a way to teach 9-to 12-year-olds about the threats of different eco-systems through the world. The launch happened last spring when de Rothschild and three fellow adventurers crossed the Arctic Ocean, from Russia to Canada via the North Pole. British and Australian schoolkids followed the team's progress through podcasts while learning about the polar regions with a specially designed classroom curriculum.
exactly.....but locally as well and younger....i attended a camp as a youth and have grown to become a part of it and its mission...thetrackingproject.org.....And had always wondered why i didnt know about these things earlier....in my opinion....it should start at birth...because thats when the other teams start pulling for your attention (corporations, political, etc)....through media, suggestive advertising...just yesterday i saw a two year old driving a mini escalade....i almost crashed my bike trying to comprehend the situation.....so yeah any effort is good....but it starts at home....with your children, because thats where you can have the most impact....unless of course your in education...and not public...but alternative or running camps that teach these things...
I totally agree that I am the primary source for early as well as later education, but it is very inspiring to see that there are programs like Adventure Ecology, that really helps. I will check out thetrackingproject.org.
We went hiking on Sunday and we met some folks w/ kids. Their mom was saying that she has to pack good treats to talk her kids into hiking ..... I want hiking to be the treat.
