It varies with the type of filter, Mick. The easy answer is that it takes damned near forever.

Fortunately, you can always smoke filterless cigarettes if you're a nicotine junkie like me. The paper and tobacco break down very quickly.

Here's an idea that might work and is pretty easy to carry around. How about an empty Altoids can? Wouldn't that be big enough to hold ashes and butts? And it closes up and can be tucked easily inside your jacket to be emptied in the trash later on. Give it a try rather than tossing those butts out.

Just as cigarettes don’t decompose well, I am always praising Europe for taking the initiative of promoting green be it energy or the environment. One area they are lacking is smoking. Besides buts all over the place, any where you go the smoke is arising! Seems to defeat the purpose of being green. The smoking laws just do not seem to work and there have been many.

Have you tried "Spencers Gifts"? They usually carry a variety of pocket ashtrays. Or you could try your local smoke shop. But the Altoid can isn't a half bad idea.
