It's true that a lot of local food is actually a lot cheaper. I buy meat from a local supplier because there are a lot of farms around my area and also shop at the market for fruit and vegetables in the summer. It's actually far cheaper and much better overall.

That is a very important point, about buying locally. My friendly neighborhood health food store uses only paper bags (which I keep and use for different uses, picnics, giving cookies, etc. The store is close enough to walk to, saving on gas, etc., and if you buy locally instead of going to the superdupermarkets or going to another town to buy what you need, think of how much gas, tire rubber, and pollution you will save! If I possibly can I always buy local.

I'd be interested to see a comparison between the resources required to make a paper bag that is used once and a plastic bag that is recycled over & over.

Sorry to drift away from the subject a little, it just occurred to me.

Mick, if you get so furious about it, what's stopping you taking your own bag or container to the shop? It's perfectly possible to rinse & reuse small plastic bags from a variety of sources, or to retain paper bread bags for further use.

Mick, and others with a problem about loose rollls, how about takling a tupperware type box with you to put that sort of thing in? It would be handy for small meat products as well like sausages or salami, and for cheese. Whatever you put in it, you can wash it out for something else next time.

That's a good point. If you have something that you take shopping with you then at least you know you have it and can refuse using plastic. Keeping cloth, paper or tupperware in your bag when out shopping is definitely a good idea.
