Only time will tell if China really is trying to turn over a new leaf to prove to the world that they are not as bad as they seem. If they keep up with the anti-pollution program they have instituted for the Olympics maybe the rest of the world will follow suit. All we can do is cross our fingers.

I feel very very uneasy about preaching to China about how they should address pollution. It is very important that they tackle it, but maybe we should all be looking a lot closer to home before we start telling everyone else what to do.

You're definitely right there. But maybe if China does something about their pollution it will make us look bad enough that our government will do something about ours.

Yes, but really we should be dealing with our pollution first! As they say people in glass houses should not throw stones! I suspect China would respond better to encouragement and partnership agreements rather than criticism. They are not stupid, they can recognize hypocrisy.

I've been wondering if the pollution is that bad in other Chinese cities; and I wonder how far out into the countryside the pollution goes.

no idea molly.. it's something they keep pretty quiet about. It seems likely that the problem is not just in Beijing.. Seem to recall readingsomething about an industrial town that has a major problem?

It is probably just like here. The big cities are polluted and the smaller cities are not. The problem is that the smaller cities will eventually be polluted because it has got to go somewhere. We need to start using combustible engines!
