Smile Biodegradable Fishing Line

A Doctor from Portland who specialized in medical sutures that dissolve in the human body after surgery created a great new product. Most petroleum based monofilament fishing line stays in the environment for 500 years. Even then it only photodegrades - it does not biodegrade.

The new BioLINE works like normal line for a year then dissolves to a trace amount of h2o and c02 - amazing --

Search for Bioline biodegradable fishing line

if you google fishing line problems you will find that this is a big problem - the product above was only introduced in August 2008 so spread the word or get some for yourself or fishing buddies.

Cool technology

On our jetty you have to be really careful or you'll find yourself tangled up in the fishing line fisher folk leave around. It's not only a hazard for birds and people, dogs will get themselves tangled in it and even hooked; I'm glad that if people really do feel the need to fish, the line they leave behind will biodegrade. A better hint: Pick up fishing lines in the first place when you're leaving!

This is a fantastic first step but a year is a long time, fishing line will still damage wildlife if in the environment this long, but hopefully this can be developed further.

My father in law is a fisherman and he hates that the fishing line does such damage to the environment. He will love to see this option. I think that this is a great idea and product.

When you think about it, dissolving sutures are the perfect item as a basis biodegradable fishing line.

I am amazed that no one has thought of it before.

I am even more upset that I didn't think of it!

LOL

I enjoy camping/fishing and am relatively conscious of my actions. I was very frustrated with all the lead and plastic used in fishing. I have been following closely over the last few years and have finally started a company which only sells environmentally friendly (or at least more friendly than what's available) fishing tackle, Green Tackle (can't post the link but it's greentackle dot com). This biodegradable fishing line, Bioline, is LONG overdue and I was so excited when it finally was launched that it contributed to my finally starting my store. There was another biodegradable line a few years back but it never took off or got US distribution.

I think the time has come. We're seeing more and more companies within the industry embracing these alternatives and promoting environmental stewardship. Big names like Berkley Fishing and South Bend have introduced biodegradable products to replace the plastic and lead the traditional tackle uses.

I fish, and when I go out, it seems like the number of people picking up other people's old line and trash outnumber those who are throwing it around. We're ready for it... we just need to spread the word. If you know somebody who likes to head out to the lake/river/beach during the summer to throw out a line, let them know there are biodegradable alternatives.
