Re: Liquid or powder?
I never liked powders as they seemed so messy. The liquid I use now is concentrated and I even use less, so my detergent lasts a long time.

ruby, powder sometimes doesn't disolve properly in cooler water, so leaves a residue which is probably what is causing the itching.

Re: Liquid or powder?
That's what causes irritation for many people. That's why I'll never use it again.

Re: Liquid or powder?
I don't use any detergent in my machine. I don't find it's necessary to get my clothes clean in a modern day machine, and it means that I can use the greywater on the garden.

Wow, really? I've never not used detergent, I should try it.

Re: Liquid or powder?
I use Tide liquid width fabreze in it. No, I don't know if it's environmentally friendly. But I take care of my elderly mother who has a bladder problem and everything she uses things up with a very strong urine smell. So I use it.

Re: Liquid or powder?
Roguegal, have you tried adding baking soda to the wash? This helps to deodorize. Perhaps some essential oils (unless there is an allergy!) to the wash water may help also, try rosemary or tea tree oil. (Tea tree oil has anti bacterial properties)

Re: Liquid or powder?
EviesEarth, thanks for the information. But, I've tried baking soda and everything else I can think. Mom does not like the sweet smelling stuff so that is out as well. I've even tried the citrus stuff. Mom has always used Fabreze in the spray bottle and when the Tide came out with it in the detergent, I bought it. I just can't take that urine smell throughout the house anymore. Besides, she likes it and I figure at her age she deserves what she wants. She turns 89 tomorrow.

Re: Liquid or powder?
I think the liquid washes out better but was someone saying that they run their clothes through without anything? I'd be curious to hear of options other than traditional detergent as I don't like the idea of constantly washing my clothes in any sort of chemical.

Re: Liquid or powder?
It depends on what I am washing.
I use liquid for the most part and only enviromentally friendly.
I do, on the otherhand, find that eco friendly detergents are often stronger as a powder... so for whites or anything that may be stinky (like dog beds) I use powder.
I wash everything twice, eventhough I have top of the line LG High Efficiency washers. Which is bad bad bad... but I'm smoking again now. *sigh*
I have found that Simple Green really does work great on colors as a laundry booster. For whites I use OxyClean as a booster.
