One of the examples of greenwashing that people on several sites have mentioned is the sale of "pure" or "natural" bottled water. I thought you all might appreciate today's Doonesbury strip on the subject at Doonesbury@Slate - Daily Dose. Today's date is 5/18/08 in case you want to check their archives for it on a later date.

It seems that packaging increasingly has the word "natural" and other misleading statements included trying to make people think the product is green when it really isn't. I've noticed little designs on labels and bottles that are supposed to look like recycling triangles, but on closer inspection they aren't.

I wrote a blog entry on greenwashing, incorporating examples that people have shared on the green forums, though there were too many to be able to include them all. Thank you all for sharing them. If you'd like to have a look at the entry, it is at Greenwashing: Green Buyer Beware.

I don't know of any specific brands, because I don't buy them, but if you go to the health and beauty isle of any drugstore, or thrift store, you will see shampoos, soaps, and conditioners that say natural, when they are not. I've seen organic used in the brand name with no organic seal and no organic ingredients also.

Yes, this is why it is always important to read the labels and to look for the organic certification seals.

Although, sometimes the labels need to be questioned also. As in the case of QAI. Read here-QAI, World's Largest Organic Certifier, Still in Bed with Horizon & Aurora Certifying Factory Farm Practices as 'Organic'

How about cosmetic companies that use "plant-derived" ingredients only to then preserve them with controversial chemicals. I'm not sure I should drop names.
