Question "green" toys and gifts for kids

Anyone have ideas on "green" toys and gifts for kids. I have two little kids (3 yrs and 8 mths), and with christmas just passed, i noticed that most of their gifts were plastic and not to mention all the packaging.
Now most of these gifts are out of my hands, but there has to be some way to make gift giving and receiving a little greener. I would appreciate any suggestions.

When my children were young I bought a lot of their toys second hand. Kids grow out of toys very quickly and the toys are usually still in very good condition so it makes sense to re use them. Plastic toys are very easy to clean so they look as good as new.

When I was a child, I used to like making rag dolls and teddy bears with my grandmother. You can use up lots of left over material that way. My grandmother even made little vests for the bears.

I loved making rag dolls and soft toys too. My grandma had a 'rag bag' with lots of bits of material, buttons, ribbon etc. We stuffed the toys with old socks or tights (clean of course). The special part was having one to one time with my grandma and a feeling of pride in what I made. Being able to sew well is a very useful skill to have.

Fireworks were always fun growing up!

I am now proud to be an owner/producer of a firework company. Here is a clip of our one of our shows (friend was taping it)... YouTube - Chariots of fire

Those are great ideas. I'm sure my girls would have lots of fun making dolls and toys with me. And who doesn't like fireworks.

You wouldn't have some information on how to make rag dolls and soft toys, would you?
